This video shows a superb bolide recorded over Spain on January 9, at 21:08 UT. It was brighter than the full Moon, with an absolute magnitude of -14. The fireball was observed by a wide number of casual eyewitnesses, who reported it on social networks.
The event was generated by a meteoroid following an asteroidal orbit that hit the atmosphere at about 67,000 km/h. The fireball overflew the provinces of Palencia and León (northern Spain). It began at an altitude of about 86 km over the locality of Lomas (province of Palencia), moved northwest, and ended at a height of around 23 km over the locality of Joara (province of León).
The preliminary analysis of this event shows that the meteoroid was not fully destroyed: a small part of the meteoroid survived and reached the ground as a meteorite. The first estimation for the mass of the surviving fragment yields 10-30 grams.
This bright meteor was recorded in the framework of the SMART project, operated by the Southwestern Europe Meteor Network (SWEMN) from the meteor-observing stations located at La Hita (Toledo), Calar Alto, Sierra Nevada, La Sagra (Granada), Olocau (Valencia), and Marçà (Tarragona). The event has been analyzed by the principal investigator of the SMART project: Dr. Jose M. Madiedo, from the Institute of Astrophysics of Andalusia (IAA-CSIC). Its code in the SWEMN database is: SWEMN20250109_210815.
