Meteor Activity Outlook for 16-22 April 2016

During this period the moon reaches its full phase on Friday April 22nd. On that date the moon will be located opposite the sun and will remain above the horizon all night long. This weekend the waxing gibbous moon will set during the early morning hours and will allow a few hours of viewing under dark skies between moonset and the start of morning twilight.

AMOS in Chile

Slovak astronomers from Comenius University continue in installation of their original AMOS meteor system, particularly in Atacama desert in Chile. AMOS (All-sky Meteor Orbit System) is observing almost entire sky by video and provides meteor trajectory and orbital data. Two AMOS cameras were installed in Space Observatory (San Pedro de Atacama) and in Paniri Caur Observatory in Chiu-Chiu.

During this period the moon reaches its first quarter phase on Thursday April 14th. On that date the moon will be located 90 degrees east of the sun and will set during the mid-morning hours. This weekend the waxing crescent moon will set during the late evening hours and will not pose any problems for viewing meteor activity as long as you keep the lunar glare out of your field of view.
